Workforce Investment Act (WIA) focuses on meeting the needs of businesses
for skilled workers and training, education and employment needs of
individuals. This program is offered to individuals that meet certain
eligibility requirements. Please contact
our office to discuss your opportunities.
WIA Provides:
Career Counseling: ETD's trained staff work closely with the
customer to determine their exact needs and eligibility. The primary
focus in assisting our customer is in securing and maintaining employment.
The counselor will evaluate the skills, abilities and interest of
the customer. Customers may be required to take the PESCO assessment.
This assessment provides the customer and ETD counselor with a distinct
categorization of the customer's abilities as compared to those required
by the desired career objective. This system coupled with customer
interviews affords the counselor the information necessary to execute
appropriate and successful job matching or training.
Access to labor market information: Consistent contact is maintained
with the customer through participation in Job Club. Here the Employment
coordinator, in conjunction with the customer, compares assessment
and interest information to the current labor market demand in order
to make a successful job match. This is accomplished via the use of
the Talent Bank, ES services, want ads, employment agencies, longstanding
relationships with local employers, the establishing of new employer
contacts, weekly employer visits to Job Club and annual job fairs.
Training Opportunities: Prior to obtaining training through
the WIA program a customer must speak to our intake department to
determine eligibility. If a customer qualifies they will then be given
the PESCO assessment. This will help identify the customer's aptitude
levels, general educational development levels, and interests. These
results are closely interpreted, evaluated and discussed with the
customer and a potential suitable occupation is identified. The customer
will use the information given to further research in the occupation
using Open Options and the Talent Freeway. Close attention is paid
to the marketability and wage paid in the field to make sure self-sufficiency
will be achieved by obtaining training in the field of interest.
Workforce Readiness: ETD can provide training components to
equip the customer with the basic skills needed to secure and maintain
employment. The skills taught are related to the world of work, academics
and personal growth--all key components in seeking employment that
will prove to be beneficial to anyone who takes advantage of these
resources:
- Resume/cover letter Preparation
- Interviewing/Dress for Success
- Job Search Strategies/Conducting
an Effective Job Search
- Job Retention
- Enhancement of Math and Reading
Skills
- GED Pre-testing and preparation
- Test taking skills
- Computer Basics
Rapid response dislocated worker assistance: ETD will provide
employment and training services to workers laid off due to market
demand, downsizing, merging, reorganizing and transforming. ETD plays
a major role in helping workers achieve a successful transition to
new employment through involvement in Dislocated Worker Programs.
ETD works with employers to provide on-site pre-layoff services to
insure a smooth transition for affected workers. Our staff is experienced
and ready to assist with:
