Welfare to Work
 |
The Welfare Reform Program provides placement
and training opportunities for customers receiving assistance from
the Family Independence Agency (FIA). The program emphasizes job attainment
and to help customers move towards self-sufficiency.
ETD's staff of professionals are trained to assist in reducing the
obstacles to self-sufficiency by helping current and former welfare
recipients become job-ready, learn interview techniques, find employment,
locate affordable childcare, and access other necessary services.
Qualifying customers are offered the following services:
Job Readiness: customers will participate in mock job interviews
and workshops on how to fill out an application properly. They will
develop and finalize a resume, cover letter, skill cards and budget
worksheets.
Job Club: After successful completion of the Job Readiness
workshop the customer will begin up to a two week intense job search
utilizing the job club. The customer can access interviews by utilizing
the tools available including: fax, phone, newspaper want-ads, internet
use, job developers, mini job fairs and local company job postings.
Assessment: ETD recognizes that the key to all successful activities
is a quality comprehensive assessment. Currently the following assessments
are used: PESCO, TABE, Prove It, GED practice tests, Differential
Aptitude Test, Learning Styles Inventory and the U.S. Basics tests.
Supportive Services: We will assist the customer in breaking
down barriers that may otherwise make it impossible for them to obtain
and keep a job. These services are discussed with the customer on
an individual basis but may include: daycare, transportation, clothes
for work, and housing options.
The goal of our Workfirst program is to assist welfare recipients
to move towards self-sufficiency. Below are success stories from past
participants in our program. These are only a few examples of how
this program can work for you! Self-Sufficiency is only a phone call
away.
Success Stories Customer's perspective
on ETD's Highland Park Workfirst Program
 |
Hello, my name
is Eugina Wilkins and I attended a Job Readiness class at the
Highland Park, Michigan Works! Service Center. I went to the
Work First program thinking, "how can they possibly help me?"
I went along to U.P.S. Logistics for a tour and filled out an
application through Norell Services. Three days later I was
called for an interview and job! I started off as a parts sorter
responsible for taking parts off the line and putting them on
carts by number. After three months I was trained as a packer
where I was responsible for taking parts off the cart and putting
them on different shelves for various dealers. I completed my
90 days with Norell and was hired on by the company. I have
since received several |
pay raises and have been trained in
every department and was promoted to line leader. I feel good about
myself and my ability to take care of my family. I have a house and
a car now and my life is going on the right track. Being involved
in the Work First Program was not only a positive for me but my family
as well. The program can benefit you if you let it.
